About Us

The International Institute of Modified Containers (IIMC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring the safety, innovation, and regulatory compliance of modified intermodal shipping containers. Our mission is to provide essential guidelines that allow container modifications to comply with international standards, ensuring they seamlessly integrate into existing containerized freight logistics.

IIMC operates as a collaborative platform, bringing together industry leaders, regulatory authorities, container workshops, and assessors. By managing and maintaining the Modified Container Code (MCC), we ensure that all container modifications are safe, compliant, and do not compromise the structural integrity or compatibility with standard freight systems. Through these efforts, IIMC supports innovation in containerized logistics without disrupting established transportation systems.

Our Story

The International Institute of Modified Containers (IIMC) was established with the mission of ensuring the safety, compliance, and seamless integration of modified intermodal shipping containers into standard containerized freight logistics. Since the early 2000s, industry specialists encountered a range of challenges while collaborating with stakeholders such as modification workshops and container owners (innovators/inventors), particularly when international solutions or external companies failed to meet required standards. This highlighted the need for unified guidelines and standards to ensure that modifications were compliant, safe, and met the demands of global logistics.

As global demands evolved—with increased needs for mobile units due to natural disasters, instability, and developments in various sectors—the necessity for robust, clear-cut guidelines became even more pressing. Recognizing this, IIMC was formed to bring together industry leaders, engineers, workshops, and regulatory bodies, ensuring that all container modifications adhere to the highest international standards without compromising the structural integrity, external dimensions of the containers, or introducing improper modifications that could affect handling.

At the heart of our work is the Modified Container Code (MCC), which serves as the definitive guide for safe and compliant modifications. As we continue to evolve, our commitment remains focused on fostering collaboration and maintaining best practices that allow for the responsible adaptation of modified containers while ensuring compliance with existing containerized logistics frameworks.

Our Mission

At IIMC, our mission is to facilitate safe, responsible container modifications that meet the stringent standards of global intermodal transportation. We work to ensure that all modified containers comply with the highest safety and regulatory standards, enabling their seamless integration into existing containerized freight logistics without compromising structural integrity. Our guiding principles include fostering collaboration among stakeholders, promoting continuous improvement, and upholding best practices in container modification.

01.

Safe Modification

We are dedicated to ensuring that all modifications to intermodal containers adhere to the highest standards of safety, preserving their structural integrity and ensuring compliance with international regulations. The Modified Container Code (MCC), maintained by IIMC, provides essential guidance to ensure modifications are safe and compliant.

02.

Intermodal Transportation

Our focus is on ensuring that modified containers fit seamlessly into existing transportation systems, maintaining their compatibility with various modes such as sea, rail, and road. By promoting best practices in container adaptation, we ensure that modified containers meet all operational standards without altering their external dimensions or structural integrity.

03.

Environmental Responsibility

At IIMC, we support responsible modification practices that minimize environmental impact and promote efficient resource use. Ensuring compliance with intermodal standards helps enable more efficient shipping, reducing the carbon footprint of containerized logistics and aligning with global sustainability efforts.

04.

Continuous Innovation

We are committed to fostering technological advancements in container modifications that enable innovative solutions while maintaining compliance with intermodal standards. Through ongoing research, collaboration, and expertise-sharing, we ensure that modified containers remain safe, compliant, and open to innovation.

Our Association

Constitutive Meeting

The Constitutive Meeting of the International Institute of Modified Containers (IIMC) marked the official foundation of the organization. It brought together industry leaders, experts, and innovators to form the guiding body that oversees the governance and mission of IIMC. The meeting set the framework for the ongoing development of standards in container modifications and established the organization’s core principles of safety, innovation, and collaboration.

Modified Container Code

The Modified Container Code (MCC) is a comprehensive guide created by the International Institute of Modified Containers (IIMC) to establish global standards for modifying steel freight containers. It serves as a critical reference for ensuring that all container modifications comply with international safety, structural, and environmental standards. The MCC outlines best practices for modifying containers to preserve their integrity and functionality across different modes of transportation, including rail, road, and sea.

This code provides detailed guidelines for workshops and assessors to follow during the modification process, covering areas such as welding, structural modifications, and surface treatments. By adhering to the MCC, organizations ensure that their modified containers meet the necessary criteria for safe and efficient use in global intermodal transportation.

Industry & Stakeholders Guidelines

The Industry & Stakeholders Guidelines provide a structured approach for collaboration between the International Institute of Modified Containers (IIMC) and key industry participants, including regulatory authorities, container modification workshops, logistics companies/terminals, container owners/operators. These guidelines are designed to ensure that all parties involved in the modification, inspection, and use of steel freight containers adhere to standardized safety, structural, and operational practices.

By following these guidelines, stakeholders—whether they own, operate, transport, or modify containers—can ensure that modifications meet international regulations, guaranteeing the durability, safety, and efficiency of containers in intermodal transportation. The guidelines emphasize the importance of communication and cooperation across sectors, fostering a shared commitment to maintaining high standards and promoting innovation in container modification and usage.
